School, Family, and Community Writing

I look at each classroom as a writing community in itself, and also as part of a larger writing community that includes faculty, family, and writers and readers everywhere. Guided by this vision, I provide classroom residencies, teacher training, family writing workshops, and community readings.

My teaching experience began when I volunteered for the Tucson Association for the Blind. Since then I have presented school residencies though the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Arizona Department of Education, Tucson Unified School District, and the non-profit ArtsReach, which I co-founded to provide writing programs in Native American communities. I’ve conducted teacher training through in-class collaboration and inservices.

To promote family literacy, I’ve offered family writing workshops through school districts, Head Start programs, the Tohono O’odham Nation, and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. I’ve been a featured speaker and workshop presenter for U.S. Health and Human Services and the Arizona Department of Education.

All my writing programs promote writing skills as measured by the Common Core, the basis of most standardized testing systems. The talents of my students, from pre-school through adult, deserve recognition. I’ve organized readings at the National Indian Education Association and University of Arizona, for the Tohono O’odham Nation, and for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, as well as for individual schools.
